Google Ads Data Connector User Guide

Google Ads is a powerful online advertising platform that allows businesses to reach potential customers across Google's vast network. This guide will walk you through how to connect your Google Ads data to Power My Analytics, create reports in Looker Studio, and understand key metrics and considerations when working with Google Ads data.



Prerequisites

Before connecting Google Ads to Power My Analytics:
  1. Ensure you have a Google account with at least Read-Only access to the Google Ads or Manager account you want to connect

Adding Google Ads as a Data Source

  1. Log out of all Google accounts except the one you want to connect.
  2. In your Power My Analytics Hub, select Sources from the menu.
  3. Click + New Data Source and choose Google from the gallery.
  4. Sign in to your Google account when prompted.
  5. Grant Power My Analytics access to your Google account (See, edit, create, and delete your Google Ads accounts and data). Power My Analytics will never edit, create, or delete anything in your Google Ads account; Google does not provide a read-only option.


Creating a Looker Studio Report

  1. After adding Google Ads as a data source, go to Reports > Looker Studio in your PMA hub
  2. Select Google Ads under Create Looker Studio Report (this will open the official Looker Studio application in a new window)
  3. Google Looker Studio Configuration:
    1. Step 1:
      1. Name your data source (e.g. "Google Ads - Your Company Name")
      2. Select your Power My Analytics hub from the dropdown
      3. Optional: Leave "Use report template for new reports" checked for the PMA demo template
      4. Click Next
    2. Step 2:
      1. User Account: Choose your Google Ads account for real data or "Sample Account" for sample data
      2. Click Next
    3. Step 3:
      1. Select "Account" for reports
      2. Optional: Allow "Account" modification in reports
      3. Click Connect (top right)
    4. Step 4:
      1. Click Create Report (top right)

Key Reports and Fields

Google Ads data in Power My Analytics offers a wide range of metrics and dimensions. Here are some popular metrics you can use in your reports:
  1. Account Metrics: Impressions, Interactions, Interaction Rate, Clicks, Avg. CPC, Avg. Cost, Cost, Conv. rate, Conversions, Cost/conv., View Through Conversions
  2. Campaign Metrics: Clicks, Impressions, CTR, Avg. CPC, Cost, Conversions, View Through Conversions, Cost/conv., Conv. rate
  3. Ad Group Metrics: Clicks, Impressions, CTR, Avg. CPC, Cost, Conversions, View Through Conversions, Cost/conv., Conv. rate
  4. Ad Metrics: Clicks, Impressions, CTR, Avg. CPC, Cost, Conversions, View Through Conversions, Cost/conv., Conv. rate
  5. Keyword Metrics: Clicks, Impressions, CTR, Avg. CPC, Cost, Conversions, View Through Conversions, Cost/conv., Conv. rate, Avg. CPM

  9. Local Service Leads Metrics: Business category, consumer name, lead charged status, lead ID, lead status, lead type, phone number, service type

Limitations and Important Considerations

  1. Backfilling: Backfilling is limited to 2 years, with an initial backfill of 13 months when first connecting.
  2. Live fields: Conversion Action and Conversion Category are available as live fields only.

Unavailable Data 

  1. Manager account metrics are unavailable. You'll need to issue separate requests for each client account.
  2. Accounts that are in a draft state
  3. Accounts that are not enabled
  4. Unique Users
  5. Performance Max campaigns: unavailable at Ad level, available at Campaign level
  6. Discovery Product Feed campaigns
  7. Demand Gen campaigns
  8. Custom fields
