How to Use Schema Explorer

How to Use Schema Explorer

The PMA Schema Explorer is an easy way to find metrics and dimensions that are available for your connectors and identify any possible conflicts or errors. Schema Explorer can find additional fields that are compatible with your selected fields and available in the same tables. This can help you avoid mix-and-match errors when creating reports in Looker Studio.

What Is a Mix-And-Match Error in Looker Studio?

Each connector contains two or more tables which contain partial sets of all the available fields for that connector. This can cause a mix-and-match error.
  1. In Looker Studio, only fields that are from the same table can be used together in one chart. Some fields may be available in more than one table, but may not be available in all tables.
  2. Using fields from two or more different tables together in one chart causes a mix-and-match error. Schema Explorer displays the limited set of fields available in each table so you are able to avoid this error.
  3. See Connector Error: Can’t Mix and Match Fields from Different Tables for more help with this issue.
If you are using the Sheets add-on: Mix-and-match errors are not possible, and you do not need to use Schema Explorer to avoid them. You can still use Schema Explorer to browse metrics and dimensions for your connectors.

Explore Connectors and Fields

Open your Power My Analytics Hub. On the left navigation pane under Tools, click Schema Explorer.

Click the Connector dropdown and choose the connector you want to use.

If there is more than one language available for the connector, select a language.

Filter Fields

Before selecting fields to check for their compatibility, you can filter the fields shown:
  1. Field Search - Enter a keyword search of a field's label, name, and description. This can be left blank (default). You can hover over a field label to see the API's field name.
  2. Field Type - Select Dimensions, Metrics, or All (default).
  3. Metric Type - Select Live, Lifetime, or All (default).
  4. Table - Select one of the available tables for the connector, or All tables (default).

Fields that do not meet these criteria are not displayed in the table. The number of fields meeting your criteria is displayed at Fields matching filters.

Select Available Fields

To see compatible fields, find the first field you want from your filtered results.
  1. Select your field by clicking the check box on the left side of the field's row. Your selection will appear in Fields selected.
  2. Unavailable fields will no longer be displayed in the table. The updated number of available fields is shown in Fields compatible with selected fields.
  3. You can continue and select another available field's check box. The display of available and unavailable fields is updated each time you select or deselect a field.
You can continue to refine your search in the Schema Explorer and find available fields that can be used in the same chart.
