Invalid Field Name Error: The data source associated with this component has invalid characters in its field names

Info
When you use Data Studio with Power My Analytics connectors, you may see an error about invalid characters in your field names. This article explains what causes it and how to clear it.

Error

"Invalid field name error: The data source associated with this component has invalid characters in its field names."

Invalid field name error

Data Studio only allows letters, numbers, and underscores in field names. When a name that comes from your source platform (for example a campaign, ad set, event, or custom conversion) contains any other character, such as an ampersand (&), a comma, a colon, a space, or an accented letter, Data Studio cannot process that field and shows this error. This is most common on non-English accounts, where names often include commas, ampersands, or accented characters.

How to clear this error

The most reliable way to clear this error today is to make sure the name on the source platform uses only letters, numbers, and underscores:

  1. On the source platform (for example Meta or Google Ads), rename the campaign, event, or custom conversion so its name uses only letters, numbers, and underscores.
  2. In your report, refresh the field list so it picks up the change: open the report in Edit mode, then go to Resource > Manage added data sources, click Edit next to the Power My Analytics data source, click Refresh Fields, and click Done.
  3. Add the field to your chart or scorecard again.

If you would rather not rename the item

This is a current Data Studio limitation, and our team is looking into additional options. We are not always able to change the field name on our side, so if renaming on the source platform is not an option for you, contact the Power My Analytics support team and include:

  • The specific connector experiencing the issue
  • The URL of the Data Studio report
  • A screenshot of the error message (if possible)
  • When the issue started occurring

We will take a look and let you know what options are available for your report.

Notes
Refreshing the field list only re-reads the fields available from your data source; it does not change or remove any of your data. This applies to all Power My Analytics connectors.
