Awin is a global affiliate marketing network that connects advertisers with publishers to drive commission-based sales. This guide will walk you through setting up the Awin data connector in Power My Analytics, creating reports in Data Studio, and understanding the transaction, publisher, and creative data Awin provides.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, ensure you have:
- An active Awin account (Publisher or Advertiser)
- An OAuth2 API access token generated in your Awin account
- A user role with permission to generate API tokens
Awin offers both Publisher and Advertiser accounts, and the available reports differ between them. Connect the account type that matches your role. Your API token is shown only once when you create it, so copy it right away.
Adding Awin as a Data Source
- In your Awin account, open your profile, go to Account, select the API credentials tab, and create a new token. Copy it right away, since it is shown only once. You can also contact your Awin account manager to obtain your OAuth2 token.
- Navigate to your Power My Analytics hub and select Sources from the menu.
- Click + Add new source and choose Awin from the gallery.
- Enter your API Token.
- Enter a name for your Awin account and click Connect.
The Awin accounts available to your token will be ready to select when you create your reports.
For step-by-step connection instructions, see How to Connect to Awin.
Creating a Data Studio Report
Follow these steps to create a Data Studio report using your Awin data:
- In the PMA hub, navigate to Reports > Data Studio.
Select Awin under Create Data Studio Report (this will open the official Data Studio application in a new window).
- Name your data source (e.g., "Awin - Organization Name").
- Power My Analytics Hub: Choose your PMA hub from the dropdown.
- User Account: Select your PMA user account.
- Accounts: Select the Awin account you want to report on (for example, "Power My Analytics (advertiser)").
- Region: Defaults to GB. Select the region of your Awin program.
- Timezone: Defaults to UTC. Select the timezone you report in.
- Optional: Check Allow to be modified in reports beside Accounts, Region, or Timezone to let report editors change them inside Looker Studio.
- Optional: Leave "Use report template for new reports" checked to use the PMA report template.
- Click Connect (top right) to complete the data source configuration.
- Click Create Report (top right).
Set Region and Timezone to match your Awin account before you connect. If they are left on defaults that do not match your account, your report can show mismatched or empty data.
Key Reports and Fields
The Awin connector provides three report tables: Transactions (one row per individual sale, lead, or other commissionable event), Publishers (aggregated publisher performance), and Creatives (aggregated performance for banners, links, and other promotional assets). Some popular metrics include:
- Transaction Detail Metrics: Sale Amount, Commission Amount, Advertiser Cost, and Network Fee by Transaction ID, Order Ref, Commission Status, Type, Campaign, Voucher Code, and Customer Country
- Publisher Performance Metrics: Clicks, Impressions, Total Value, and Total Comm by Publisher Name and Publisher ID; Pending, Confirmed, Declined, and Bonus transaction counts, values, and commissions by Publisher Name
- Creative Performance Metrics: Clicks, Impressions, Confirmed Value, and Confirmed Comm by Creative Name, Creative ID, and Tag Name
- Commission Status Metrics: Pending Comm, Confirmed Comm, Declined Comm, and Bonus Comm by Date and Publisher Name, to watch commissions mature from pending to confirmed
- Device and Attribution Metrics: Sale Amount and Commission Amount by Click Device, Transaction Device, Customer Country, and Voucher Code
For a complete list of available Awin fields, refer to the Schema Explorer.
When building a "cost" or "spend" column, use Advertiser Cost. This is the total cost the advertiser incurs for a transaction, and it already includes the publisher commission plus the Awin network fee. Adding Commission Amount and Network Fee to it would double-count your costs.
Limitations and Important Considerations
- Live reporting: Awin data is retrieved directly from the Awin API when your report runs, rather than from data cached in the PMA warehouse. This is why the Region and Timezone parameters are set in the report configuration.
- Region and Timezone: Region defaults to GB and Timezone defaults to UTC. Set each to match your Awin account, or your reports can return mismatched or empty data.
- API rate: Awin caps requests at 20 API calls per minute per user, so large pulls are paced to stay within that ceiling.
- Transaction status maturation: Transactions move from pending to confirmed or declined as Awin validates them, so confirmed revenue and commission for recent dates keep changing until they settle. This is expected behavior, not a data error.
- Account type differences: Publisher and Advertiser accounts see different reports. Connect the account type that matches the reports you expect.
- Amended transactions: When Awin amends a transaction, the Amended field is set to 1 and the previous values are preserved in Old Sale Amount and Old Commission Amount, alongside the Amend Date and Amend Reason.
- Currency fields: Monetary fields have companion currency-code dimensions (such as Sale Currency and Commission Currency). If your account spans multiple currencies, group or filter by the currency dimension before totaling monetary metrics.
- Alpha connector: The Awin connector is newly released and currently in alpha. If you spot anything unexpected, we would love to hear from you.
Unavailable Data
The following Awin data is not available through Awin's standard reporting API and therefore is not available in Power My Analytics:
- Basket or product-level line items (the individual products within a transaction)
- Creative attribution on individual transactions (creative performance is available as aggregates in the Creatives table, but the Transactions table does not include a creative dimension)
- Transaction validation actions (approving or declining transactions is an action performed in Awin; PMA reporting is read-only)
If there are additional Awin fields or reports you would like to see in Power My Analytics, please submit a ticket with screenshots of the reports you would like to build.
Troubleshooting
- Invalid or expired API token: The connection returns an authorization error. Regenerate the token in your Awin account (profile > Account > API credentials) and reconnect the source.
- No data returned: Confirm your connected account type (Publisher or Advertiser) matches the reports you expect, and check that Region and Timezone in the report configuration match your Awin account.
- Totals do not match the Awin UI: Usually a Region or Timezone difference. Set both to match your Awin account and compare over the same date range.
- Pending versus confirmed differences: Recent transaction, revenue, and commission figures can look lower than expected because they are still maturing. This is expected, not a fault, and confirmed values settle over Awin's validation window.
- Rate limit reached: Very large or frequent pulls can hit Awin's 20 calls per minute cap and pause. Reduce the date range or field count and retry.
