Bing Webmaster Tools Data Connector User Guide

Bing Webmaster Tools Data Connector User Guide

Info
Bing Webmaster Tools is Microsoft's free service for monitoring how your website performs in Bing search. With the Power My Analytics Bing Webmaster Tools connector, you can bring your Bing search clicks and impressions, your top queries and pages, and your site's crawl and index health into your reports. This guide covers what you need before you connect, how to add Bing Webmaster Tools as a data source, how to build your first report, and where to find the available fields.
Notes
Bing Webmaster Tools is an Alpha connector. It is newly released and available for early access, so fields, configuration options, and behavior may change as we build it out. If Bing Webmaster Tools does not appear when you add a new source in your Hub, submit a ticket to request access. We will expand this guide as the connector develops, and your feedback helps shape what comes next.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have:
  • An active Bing Webmaster Tools account. Bing Webmaster Tools lets you sign in with a Microsoft, Google, or Facebook account.
  • At least one site added and verified in Bing Webmaster Tools. Power My Analytics can only report on verified sites.
  • Your Bing Webmaster Tools sign-in credentials. Bing Webmaster Tools connects with a standard sign-in, so there is no API key to copy.

Adding Bing Webmaster Tools as a Data Source

  1. In your Power My Analytics Hub, select Sources from the menu.
  2. Click + Add new source and choose Bing Webmaster Tools from the gallery.
  3. Sign in with the account you use for Bing Webmaster Tools and approve the request to give Power My Analytics read-only access to your Bing Webmaster Tools data.
Power My Analytics collects data for every verified site on the account you sign in with. You choose which site to report on when you build a report.

For step-by-step connection instructions, see How to Connect to Bing Webmaster Tools.

Creating a Data Studio Report

  1. In your Hub, go to Reports > Data Studio and click the orange + Create report button.
  2. In the Templates window, select Single sources, find Bing Webmaster Tools, and click Open in Data Studio.
  3. In Data Studio, click Authorize if you are prompted, then select your Power My Analytics Hub and the Bing Webmaster Tools account you connected.
  4. Select the verified site you want to report on.
  5. Click Connect (top right), then click Create report.

Key Reports and Fields

The Bing Webmaster Tools connector provides four tables:
  • Rank And Traffic: Daily, site-level Clicks, Impressions, and CTR from Bing search. This table includes traffic from all Bing search verticals (Web, Chat, News, Images, Videos, and Knowledge Panel).
  • Query Stats: Weekly performance for your site's top search queries: Query, Clicks, Impressions, CTR, Avg Click Position, and Avg Impression Position.
  • Page Stats: Weekly performance for your site's top pages: Page URL, Clicks, Impressions, CTR, Avg Click Position, and Avg Impression Position.
  • Crawl Stats: Daily crawl and index health: In Index, In Links, Crawl Error Rate, crawl requests by HTTP status (Code 2xx, Code 301, Code 302, Code 4xx, Code 5xx, All Other Codes), and crawl issues (Blocked By Robots Txt, Connection Timeout, Dns Failures, Contains Malware).
CTR and Crawl Error Rate are calculated by Power My Analytics, because Bing Webmaster Tools does not provide them directly. CTR is Clicks divided by Impressions; Crawl Error Rate is crawl errors divided by crawled pages.

For the complete list of available Bing Webmaster Tools fields, open the Bing Webmaster Tools Schema Explorer in your Hub.

Limitations and Important Considerations

  • Backfilling: Bing Webmaster Tools does not let us request a specific date range. When you first connect, Power My Analytics collects the history that Bing Webmaster Tools currently makes available for each site, which can be much shorter than the 24 months many connectors offer (a newly verified site may have only a few weeks of data). After that, the daily data sync adds new data as Bing publishes it, so your history in Power My Analytics builds over time.
  • Alpha connector: While Bing Webmaster Tools is in Alpha, fields, configuration options, and behavior may change. If a field is renamed or removed, you may need to update the reports that use it.
  • Weekly query and page data: Query Stats and Page Stats are weekly. Each row is dated a Friday and covers a seven-day period, so these tables cannot be broken down by individual day. The newest week can take about a week to appear, because Bing publishes weekly data on a delay.
  • Top queries and pages only: Bing Webmaster Tools provides query and page data for your site's top queries and pages, so Query Stats and Page Stats totals may not add up to the site-wide totals in Rank And Traffic.
  • Average position: Avg Click Position and Avg Impression Position are whole numbers. A lower number means a higher placement in Bing search results.
  • Verified sites only: Only sites verified in Bing Webmaster Tools are available. If you verify a new site after connecting, Power My Analytics adds it automatically the next time your site list refreshes, which also happens when you open the site selector in your report.

Unavailable Data

The following Bing Webmaster Tools data is not currently available through the Power My Analytics Bing Webmaster Tools connector:
  • Daily query-level and page-level data (Bing Webmaster Tools provides these weekly)
  • Country and device breakdowns of search performance
  • Backlinks, Keyword Research, URL Inspection, Sitemaps, and Site Scan data
If there is a Bing Webmaster Tools field or report you would like to see, please submit a ticket with a description or screenshot of what you need. Requests during Alpha help us decide what to add next.

Troubleshooting

If your Bing Webmaster Tools data does not look the way you expect, start with Basic Troubleshooting. A few Bing Webmaster Tools patterns are worth checking first:
  • The connection fails or no sites are available: The account you signed in with has no verified sites. Verify at least one site in Bing Webmaster Tools, then connect again.
  • A site is missing: The site is not verified in Bing Webmaster Tools, or it was verified after you connected. Confirm the site is verified; new sites are added the next time your site list refreshes.
  • Your data only goes back a few weeks: Bing Webmaster Tools only provides the history it currently holds for your site. Your history in Power My Analytics grows with each daily data sync.
  • Query or page totals do not match Rank And Traffic: Query Stats and Page Stats cover your top queries and pages only, and they are reported weekly. Compare them with each other rather than with the daily site totals.
