How to Connect to Microsoft Advertising
Looking to bring your Microsoft Advertising (formerly Bing Ads) data into a single, automated reporting workflow? This guide will walk you through connecting Microsoft Advertising as a data source in Power My Analytics, so you can centralize your search advertising metrics, create comprehensive reports, and make data-driven decisions to optimize your campaigns.
Prerequisites
Before you begin, make sure you have:
- A Microsoft Advertising account with either the Super Admin or Advertiser Campaign Manager role on the account you want to connect
- Multifactor authentication (MFA) enabled on your Microsoft Advertising account
If you do not yet have one of the required roles, follow Step 1 below to grant it before continuing.
Step 1: Grant Account Access in Microsoft Advertising
Power My Analytics requires either the Super Admin or Advertiser Campaign Manager role to authorize the connection and pull your ad data. To grant access to a user in Microsoft Advertising:
- Log in to Microsoft Advertising.
- Go to Tools > Account access.
- Under User management, click Invite user.
- Set the Account role to Advertiser Campaign Manager or Super Admin.
- Send the invitation, and have the invited user accept it before continuing.
Power My Analytics' connector will never edit, create, or delete anything in your Microsoft Advertising account. The Super Admin or Advertiser Campaign Manager role is required because Microsoft's API restricts ad data access to those roles.
Step 2: Add Microsoft Advertising as a Data Source in Power My Analytics
- Log in to your Power My Analytics hub at https://hub.powermyanalytics.com.
- Navigate to Sources from the main menu.
- Click + Add new source.
- Select Microsoft Advertising from the list of available sources.
- Sign in to your Microsoft account using credentials with one of the required roles from Step 1.
- Complete the multifactor authentication prompt and authorize the requested permission scopes.
Once connected, Microsoft Advertising will appear in your list of active data sources. Your Microsoft Advertising data will automatically begin syncing to your Power My Analytics data warehouse — 13 months of historical data is imported automatically on the initial backfill, with up to 2 years available via manual backfill. When the initial backfill is finished, you can use this data in Looker Studio reports, Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, or export it to your preferred data destination.
MFA required: Microsoft requires multifactor authentication on accounts used with their advertising APIs. If MFA is not yet enabled on your Microsoft Advertising account, you'll need to enable it before the connection will succeed.
Account Name vs Account fields: For most reporting purposes, the Account Name field is the recommended field to use, as it displays the clean, human-readable account name. The Account field appends an internal ID in parentheses, which is only needed if you manage multiple accounts with identical names.
