How to Connect to Semrush Projects

How to Connect to Semrush Projects

Info
Connecting Semrush Projects to Power My Analytics takes two quick steps: copy your API key from Semrush, then enter it in your Hub and choose your Projects. This guide walks you through both, plus how to remove the connection later if you need to. For what you can report on once you are connected, see the Semrush Projects Data Connector User Guide.
Notes
Semrush Projects is a Beta connector. It is available and supported now; while it is in Beta, some fields and behavior may still change as we continue to improve it.

Requirements

  • A Semrush Business plan with API units. Semrush includes API access only on its Business plan, and there is no free API tier.
  • Access to your Semrush account's Subscription Info page, where your API key is listed.
  • At least one Semrush Project with Site Audit set up and at least one completed audit. Only Projects with Site Audit are available to connect.
  • No sign-in pop-up is needed. Semrush Projects connects with an API key that you paste into your Hub.

Connect Semrush Projects to Power My Analytics

Step 1: Copy your Semrush API key

  1. Log in to your Semrush account.
  2. Open the API Units page (Subscription Info > API Units) to find your API key.
  3. Copy the API key so it is ready to paste into your Hub.
Alert
Make sure you copy the API key, not a personal access token. Semrush offers more than one kind of credential, and they look similar. If the value you copied starts with semrtkn-pat-, it is a personal access token and will not work here. The key you need is on the API Units page.
Notes
Already connected Semrush Analytics? You can use the same API key. Semrush Projects is added as its own data source, so your Semrush Analytics source is not affected.

Step 2: Add Semrush Projects as a data source in your Hub

  1. In your Power My Analytics Hub, select Sources from the menu.
  2. Click + Add new source.
  3. Choose Semrush Projects from the connector gallery. You can type "Semrush" in the search box to find it quickly.
  4. Enter your API Key and, optionally, a Name to help you identify the account.
  5. Click Connect.
  6. Select the Projects you want to report on. Only Projects with Site Audit set up are listed.
Your Semrush Projects are now connected. Each Project you selected appears as one account under your Semrush Projects data source, labeled with the Project name and URL. Power My Analytics retrieves each Project's latest completed Site Audit with your daily data sync. There is no historical backfill, because only the latest audit is available. To get started, see the Semrush Projects Data Connector User Guide.

Troubleshooting Connection Errors

  • The connect window shows "invalid api key": You may have pasted a personal access token (starts with semrtkn-pat-) or a key with extra spaces. Copy the plain API key from the API Units page and paste it again. If no key appears there, also check the API keys page; if neither page shows a key, your Semrush subscription does not include API access.
  • No Projects are listed: None of your Semrush Projects has Site Audit set up yet. Set up Site Audit in Semrush, let the first audit finish, then reconnect your source from Sources > Action > Reconnect source.
  • A Project you expect is missing: Confirm Site Audit is set up for that Project. If you set it up after connecting, reconnect your source to refresh the Project list.
  • Sharing a screenshot with support? The error window can show your pasted key. Blank it out before you share the screenshot, and if a key has already been shared, regenerate it in Semrush.
For other issues, see Basic Troubleshooting.

Remove Your Semrush Projects Data Source from Power My Analytics

  1. In your Hub, select Sources from the menu.
  2. Locate your Semrush Projects data source in the list.
  3. Open the three-dot Action menu and select Remove source, then click Confirm.
Notes
Removing the source stops Power My Analytics from collecting your Semrush Projects data. Any Data Studio reports that use your Semrush Projects data source will stop returning data once the source is removed. Your API key stays active in Semrush, and other sources that use it, such as Semrush Analytics, are not affected.
