ShipStation Data Connector User Guide

ShipStation is a powerful e-commerce shipping solution that helps businesses streamline their order fulfillment process. This guide will walk you through how to connect ShipStation to Power My Analytics, create reports, and leverage key metrics to gain insights into your shipping operations. By integrating ShipStation data, you can track important KPIs like order volume, shipping costs, and carrier performance to optimize your e-commerce logistics.

Prerequisites

Before connecting ShipStation to Power My Analytics, ensure you have:
  1. API key and API secret for your ShipStation account
  2. Account owner status, or if not an account owner, your account must have either Administration or Configuration access (it is not necessary to have both)
To obtain your API key and API secret, follow the instructions in How to Connect to ShipStation.

Adding ShipStation as a Data Source

  1. Log in to your Power My Analytics hub.
  2. Go to Sources in the main menu.
  3. Click + New Data Source.
  4. Select ShipStation from the list of available sources.
  5. Enter your ShipStation API Key and API Secret.
  6. Click Connect to authenticate.

Creating a Looker Studio Report

Follow these steps to create a Looker Studio report using your ShipStation data:
  1. In your Power My Analytics hub, go to Reports > Looker Studio
  2. Select ShipStation under Create Looker Studio Report (this will open the official Looker Studio application in a new window)
  3. Google Looker Studio Configuration:
    1. Step 1:
      1. Name your data source (e.g., "ShipStation - Your Company Name")
      2. Choose your Power My Analytics hub from the dropdown
      3. Optional: Leave "Use report template for new reports" checked to use PMA's demo template
      4. Click Next
    2. Step 2:
      1. User Account: Select your ShipStation account for real data or "Sample Account" for demo data
      2. Click Next
    3. Step 3:
      1. Choose "Optional - Order Status Filter" for your reports
      2. Optional: Allow "Optional - Order Status Filter" modification in reports
      3. Click Connect in the top right
    4. Step 4:
      1. Click Create Report in the top right

Key Reports and Fields

Here are some popular metrics you can use in your ShipStation reports: 
  • Key Performance Metrics: New Orders, Orders Shipped, Orders Unshipped
  • Carrier Metrics: Items by Carrier Code
  • Store Metrics: Revenue by Store Name
  • Order Metrics: Percentage of open orders by Age of Order
  • Shipping Metrics: Shipping Cost by Shipment ID, Order ID, Store Name, Order Number, Create Date, Ship Date, Ship City, Ship State, Ship Postal Code, Country, Carrier, Tracking Number
  • Item Metrics: Order ID, Item ID, Product ID, Image, SKU, Store Name, Unit Price, Item Shipping, Item Tax

Limitations and Important Considerations

  1. Backfilling: ShipStation data can be backfilled for up to 2 years.
