TikTok Ads is a powerful advertising platform that allows marketers to reach TikTok's massive global audience. This guide will walk you through how to connect TikTok Ads to Power My Analytics, create reports, and understand key metrics and considerations for analyzing your TikTok ad performance.



Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have:
  1. Admin access to the TikTok account

Grant Admin Access to a User in TikTok

To grant Admin access to a user:
  1. Go to TikTok Business Center and click on the Users tab.
  2. Open the Members section and click Invite member.
  3. Under Access Settings, select Admin.

Adding TikTok Ads as a Data Source

  1. Navigate to your Hub and select Sources from the menu.
  2. Click + New Data Source and choose TikTok Ads from the gallery.
  3. Sign in to your TikTok account to authenticate.

Creating a Looker Studio Report

Follow these steps to create a Looker Studio report using your TikTok Ads data:
  1. After adding TikTok Ads as a data source in the PMA hub, navigate to Reports > Looker Studio
  2. Select TikTok Ads under Create Looker Studio Report (this will open the official Looker Studio application in a new window)
  3. Google Looker Studio Configuration:
    1. Step 1:
      1. Name your data source (e.g. "TikTok Ads - Organization Name")
      2. Choose your Power My Analytics hub from dropdown
      3. Optional: Leave "Use report template for new reports" checked to use the PMA demo template
      4. Click Next
    2. Step 2:
      1. User Account: Select TikTok Ads account (real data) or "Sample Account" (sample data)
      2. Click Next
    3. Step 3: 
      1. Choose "Advertisers" for reports
      2. Optional: Allow "Advertisers" modification in reports
      3. Click Connect (top right) to complete the data source configuration
    4. Step 4: 
      1. Click Create Report (top right)

Key Reports and Fields

TikTok Ads data in Power My Analytics offers a wide range of metrics and dimensions. Here are some popular metrics you can use in your reports:
  • Key Performance Indicators: Account balance, active campaigns/groups/ads, cost, CPC, CPA, impressions, CTR, clicks, conversions, CPM
  • Campaigns: Name, status, budget, cost metrics, performance metrics
  • Ad Groups: Name, status, budget, bid, dates, cost metrics, performance metrics
  • Ads: Image, ad name, cost metrics, performance metrics
  • Demographics: Clicks by age group and gender
  • Placement: Ad placement locations

Limitations and Important Considerations

  1. Backfilling: Up to 2 years of historical data.
  2. Organic Data: Only ads data is available. For organic data, use our TikTok Organic data connector.
  3. Default time zone: UTC
  4. Images and image IDs: An image will only be returned for ads that are images. Non-image ad types will not return an image or image ID.

Unavailable Data

  • Deleted campaigns: Deleted campaigns may appear in TikTok’s UI but are unavailable through the API
  • Paid Likes
  • Comments
  • Shares
  • Organic data
  • Custom events are not currently supported by the API
  • Custom fields

Adjust Time Zone

TikTok Ads' API defaults to UTC. Use the time zone selector in your Hub to adjust the time zone for your main account to your local time.  Sub-accounts cannot be adjusted individually.
Notes
Data gathered before the time zone adjustment will remain fixed in the previous time zone setting.

Cost Per Follow

Cost Per Follow is not an included field in TikTok's API, but it is easy to create a calculated field to see this information.

Looker Studio

  1. Open the Resource menu and go to Manage added data sources.



  2. Click on the icon to open the TikTok Ads data source.



  3. Click Add a field and choose Add calculated field.





  4. Give the new field a name like Cost Per Follow. Use the formula SUM(Total Cost)/SUM(Follows).
  5. Click Save.



  6. Go back to your dashboard and add a Scorecard.
  7. Choose Cost Per Follow as a field and set it to use your country's currency.

Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel

  1. Select Total Cost and Follows for your metrics.



  2. Select the cell in which you wish to display Cost Per Follow.
  3. Create a formula with the cell designation for Total Cost divided by the cell designation for Follows.
