X Ads Grand Total is Greater than the Sum of Values when Reporting by Country

Info
When using our X Ads connector to report data using geo dimensions (such as Country), you may notice that the grand total (summary row) for a metric shows a higher value than the sum of the report’s data values. This article will explain why this occurs and how reporting by Country can affect these values.

Issue

When reporting by a geo dimension such as Country, an X Ads report shows a grand total for a metric as:

  • Greater than the sum of values in that report (in Looker Studio).
  • Lower than the sum of values in that report as shown in the X Ads platform (using the Spreadsheets add-on).

Cause

Summary rows are a separate API call from the rest of the data in Looker Studio, but not in the Spreadsheets add-on. This discrepancy occurs due to the inclusion of geo dimensions (Country) in the report.

  • Geo data is not available for all rows, and only rows with geo data will appear in reports using a geo dimension.
  • However, the summary row (grand total) in Looker Studio is a total of all row values, whether they are associated with geo data or not.

In Looker Studio:

The summary row will display the true value of the total, accurate to the total as reported by the X Ads platform.

In Spreadsheets reports:

Not all rows will be included, only those associated with geo data. A simple sum of these rows will produce a value that is lower than the true value of the total.

This is an expected behavior, and can be resolved by removing the geo dimension (Country) from your X Ads report.
