Create a GA4 Checkout Journey Funnel with Filters
This guide shows you how to create checkout journey funnel reports in Looker Studio using Google Analytics 4 (GA4) data from Power My Analytics. You'll learn to filter Event Name data to track the complete customer purchase process from checkout initiation to completed purchase.
Understanding Checkout Journey Events
GA4 checkout journey data is available through the Event Name dimension and Event Count metric. The checkout journey consists of four key events:
| Event Name | Description |
|---|
| begin_checkout | User begins the checkout process |
| add_shipping_info | User adds shipping information |
| add_payment_info | User adds payment information |
| purchase | User completes the purchase |
Prerequisites
Before creating your checkout journey funnel, ensure you have:
- A connected Google Analytics 4 data source in your Power My Analytics hub
- A Looker Studio report created with your GA4 data source
- Checkout journey event data configured in your GA4 property (begin_checkout, add_shipping_info, add_payment_info, purchase)
Creating Your Checkout Journey Report
Step 1: Add Required Fields
- In your Looker Studio report, add a table or chart.
Add the following fields:
- Dimension: Event Name
- Metric: Event Count
- Optional breakdown dimensions: Device Category, Country, Browser, Language, or other dimensions as needed
Step 2: Add Checkout Journey Filter
If you don't see the checkout journey events in your Event Name field options, verify that these events are properly configured and firing in your GA4 property. Events must be triggered at least once to appear in Power My Analytics reports.
- Click + Add quick filter in your report
- Give your filter a name, such as "Checkout Journey"
Set up the filter with the following configuration:
- Select Include from the dropdown
- Choose Event Name as the field
- Set condition to Equal to (=)
- Add the first event: begin_checkout
Add additional filter conditions by clicking OR:
- Include Event Name Equal to add_shipping_info
- Include Event Name Equal to add_payment_info
- Include Event Name Equal to purchase

Your filter should show "This filter has 4 clauses" when configured correctly. Each clause represents one checkout journey event.
Step 3: Apply Filter
- Click Save to apply your filter.
- Your chart will now display only checkout journey events.
- You can create funnel visualizations or use other chart types to analyze the checkout journey.
