Instagram Public Data Data Connector User Guide

Instagram Public Data Data Connector User Guide

Info
Instagram Public Data lets you follow the public performance of other Instagram Business and Creator accounts, including your competitors'. With the Power My Analytics Instagram Public Data connector, you sign in with Facebook using your own Instagram professional account, and Power My Analytics uses it to look up the public profile and post statistics of the accounts you want to track. This guide explains how Instagram Public Data differs from our Instagram Insights connector, what you need before you connect, how to add Instagram Public Data as a data source, and what to expect while the connector is in Alpha.
Notes
Instagram Public Data is an Alpha connector. It is newly released and available for early access, so fields, configuration options, and behavior may change as we build it out. We will expand this guide as the connector develops, and your feedback helps shape what comes next.

Instagram Public Data vs. Instagram Insights

Power My Analytics offers two Instagram connectors. They report on different data, so many teams use both: Instagram Insights for their own accounts, and Instagram Public Data to benchmark against other accounts.
Instagram Public Data
Instagram Insights
Best for
Competitor research and benchmarking
In-depth reporting on your own Instagram accounts
Accounts you can report on
Any public Instagram Business or Creator account, looked up by username. The accounts you track don't need to grant you access.
Only Instagram professional accounts linked to Facebook Pages you manage
How you connect
Sign in with Facebook. Your own Instagram professional account, linked to a Facebook Page you manage, runs the lookups.
Sign in with Facebook using the account that manages the Facebook Page linked to your Instagram account
Data available
Public profile and post statistics (the counts anyone can see on Instagram), such as followers, number of posts, and likes and comments on posts
Instagram Insights data such as reach, views, interactions, new followers, and follower demographics
If you want reach, audience, or other insights for an Instagram account you own or manage, use Instagram Insights instead. See the Instagram Insights Data Connector User Guide.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have:
  • Your own Instagram Business or Creator account, linked to a Facebook Page you manage. Power My Analytics uses this account to look up public data about the accounts you track. If you need to link it, see Instagram's guide to connecting an Instagram professional account to a Facebook Page.
  • Your Facebook sign-in credentials for the Facebook account that manages that Page. Instagram Public Data connects with a standard Facebook sign-in, so there is no API key to copy.
  • The Instagram usernames of the accounts you want to track. Each one must be a public Instagram Business or Creator account; personal accounts cannot be looked up.

Adding Instagram Public Data as a Data Source

  1. In your Power My Analytics Hub, select Sources from the menu.
  2. Click + Add new source and choose Instagram Public Data from the gallery.
  3. Sign in to Facebook. When Facebook asks which businesses, Pages, and Instagram accounts Power My Analytics can access, include the Facebook Page and Instagram account you want to use, then click Save.
After you connect, your Instagram Public Data data source lists the Facebook Pages you manage that have a linked Instagram Business or Creator account. For step-by-step instructions, see How to Connect to Instagram Public Data.

Key Reports and Fields

Instagram Public Data reports and fields are not available yet. While the connector is in Alpha, you can connect your Facebook and Instagram account now; we will add how to choose the accounts you track, the available tables and fields with a link to the Schema Explorer, and the steps for building a Data Studio report as they are released.

When reports are available, they will be built from regular snapshots of each tracked account's public profile and post statistics, starting when you begin tracking it.

Limitations and Important Considerations

  • Alpha connector: While Instagram Public Data is in Alpha, fields, configuration options, and behavior may change. If a field is renamed or removed, you may need to update the reports that use it.
  • Reporting data: Instagram Public Data reports and fields are not available yet. You can connect now; we will add the available fields and the steps for building a Data Studio report to this guide as they are released.
  • Public data only: Instagram Public Data includes only the statistics Instagram shows publicly. Insights such as reach, impressions, saves, profile visits, and follower demographics are available only to an account's owners and managers, through our Instagram Insights connector.
  • Business and Creator accounts only: Instagram shares public data only for Business and Creator accounts. Personal accounts cannot be looked up, and if an account you track switches to a personal account, Instagram stops returning its data.
  • Age-restricted accounts: Instagram does not return data for professional accounts with age restrictions, so they cannot be tracked.
  • No history from before you start tracking: Instagram provides an account's current totals only, not its history. Instagram Public Data records snapshots starting when you begin tracking an account, so there is no backfill of earlier data. Start tracking the accounts you care about as early as you can.
  • Shared Facebook sign-in: Instagram Public Data uses the same Facebook sign-in as our Facebook Ads, Facebook Insights, and Instagram Insights connectors. If Facebook ends your session (for example, after a password change), you may need to reconnect each of these data sources.

Unavailable Data

The following data is not available through Instagram Public Data, because Instagram shares it only with an account's owners and managers or does not provide it for the accounts you look up:
  • Reach, impressions, saves, and profile visits
  • Follower demographics, such as age, gender, and location
  • Data for personal accounts and age-restricted accounts
  • Statistics from before you started tracking an account
If there is an Instagram Public Data field or report you would like to see, please submit a ticket with a description or screenshot of what you need. Requests during Alpha help us decide what to add next.

Troubleshooting

If your Instagram Public Data source does not connect or behave the way you expect, start with Basic Troubleshooting. A few Instagram Public Data issues are worth checking first:
  • Your data source connects, but no accounts are found: The Facebook account you signed in with does not manage a Facebook Page with a linked Instagram Business or Creator account, or you did not give Power My Analytics access to that Page and Instagram account when you signed in. Link your Instagram account to a Facebook Page, then connect again and include that Page and Instagram account.
  • The Page you expected is missing from the list: Only Facebook Pages with a linked Instagram Business or Creator account are listed. Check that the Instagram account is linked to that Page, and that you signed in with the Facebook account that manages it. If you have more than one Facebook account, connect from a private or incognito browser window so you sign in to the right one.
  • Authorization or session errors: Facebook may end your session after a password change or a security check. Reconnect your data source; see Facebook/Instagram Connector Authorization Error.
  • Instagram Public Data does not appear in the source gallery: During Alpha, Instagram Public Data is available only to accounts with early access. To ask about early access, submit a ticket.
